VS Code
Set VS Code up with one line in your terminal: it installs the CLI, teaches GitHub Copilot's agent Basemodo and signs you in.
Set up
In your terminal, on macOS and Linux:
curl -fsSL https://basemodo.com/install | shOn Windows, in PowerShell:
irm https://basemodo.com/install.ps1 | iexIt installs the basemodo command, then runs basemodo setup: it asks whether your agents should know Basemodo in every project (press Enter) or only in the folder your terminal is in, finds the agents on your computer and writes Basemodo's Skills where each reads them, then opens your browser to sign you in. Running the line again updates the CLI and the Skills.
VS Code reads the Skills from ~/.agents/skills, or from the project's .agents/skills when you chose this project only. Open a new chat in VS Code, in agent mode, and ask it, for example: "Deploy this folder to Basemodo and give me the link." It runs the CLI and deploys the folder it works in, with no GitHub repository needed.
Other ways
Use one way in VS Code: the install line above, or one of these. Each gives it every command of Basemodo (the Plugin through the Remote MCP), so with two it sees every command twice (one way per client).
The Plugin
Basemodo's Skills and its Remote MCP in one install, without the CLI, from basemodocom/agent. With agent plugins turned on (the setting chat.plugins.enabled), run Chat: Install Plugin From Source from the Command Palette and give it https://github.com/basemodocom/agent. Then sign in to its Remote MCP, as below.
The Remote MCP
Install Basemodo in VS Code: VS Code opens and asks you to install it in your user profile.
Or add it yourself, to .vscode/mcp.json in a workspace, or to your user mcp.json (run MCP: Open User Configuration from the Command Palette):
{"servers": {"basemodo": {"type": "http", "url": "https://mcp.basemodo.com"}}}Then sign in: when VS Code first starts Basemodo, it registers itself and asks to sign in, opening your browser on basemodo.com, which asks you to approve it. Approve it, and VS Code acts as you through its Agent Grant. Basemodo's tools are then in Chat. If VS Code asks for a client ID, it could not register itself: see Troubleshooting. Its deploy takes a GitHub repository, not a folder.
The local MCP
The same tools on your computer, basemodo mcp. With basemodo installed (curl -fsSL https://basemodo.com/install | sh on macOS and Linux, irm https://basemodo.com/install.ps1 | iex in Windows' PowerShell) and signed in with basemodo login: install the local MCP in VS Code, or put this in mcp.json:
{"servers": {"basemodo": {"command": "basemodo", "args": ["mcp"]}}}What it needs
GitHub Copilot in VS Code: Copilot Free, Pro and Pro+ run MCP servers as they are. On Copilot Business or Enterprise, an admin of the organization must turn on the policy "MCP servers in Copilot", which is off unless they do.
